In this case study the Client had a large power transformer where the oil DGA results showed signs of an internal problem. The transformer was taken off-line and some basic electrical tests were performed.
The electrical test results showed some small changes that were still within the normal test result tolerances but had worsened over the previous 2 sets of results.
Key Challenges
The client arranged an outage and access covers were opened to do an internal inspection which revealed the problem as a defect within the core and core-earthing.
K-BIK Power’s Approach
The DGA results were assessed using the K-BIK Power oil diagnostic tool and together with the electrical results an assessment of the problem was made.
Solutions Delivered
A solution was discussed, and later another outage was arranged to implement the repairs.
The internal condition was monitored with monthly oil samples and a 6 monthly electrical test.
The repairs to the transformer were considered as having resolved the problem and the transformer has been operating without any further changes in the DGA or electrical test results.
If the issue had not been diagnosed and then located, it would have eventually led to a much more serious and expensive problem or a total transformer failure.
